Judex Okoro, Calabar Eleven persons have been reportedly killed in a communal clash between Okwabang and Beebo communities of Boki East, in Boki Local Government Area .

While two persons were killed on Friday, one each from both communities, nine Okuabang natives were hacked to death yesterday morning by Beebo guerrillas. Investigations by Daily Sun revealed that the recent clash was sparked by suspicions that the Beebo community was harvesting commodities at a farm allegedly belonging to an Okwabang man. It was learnt that, following the suspicion, a youth leader from Okwabang, simply identified as Monjok, with his team on surveillance, accosted a group of Beebo people harvesting illegally from his farm and then a disagreement ensued, leading to a shootout and, subsequently, the killing of one Beebo indigene.

A witness, who gave his name as Johnson Abang, from Okwabang, said: But the recent tension rose following suspicions that the Beebo community was harvesting commodities at a farm belonging to an Okwabang man. There and then, fighting broke out and later open shooting, which led to killing of one Beebo native. The Okwabang man ran to the community and reported himself. The community then took him to the Bateriko Police Station and he was kept in custody.

A rare 4 page special EXTRA being a printed of Charles Sumner’s speech at the Cooper Institute on September 10th, on the present situation of relations with France and England and the denouncement of any recognition of any new power that has slavery as a cornerstone. Sumner addresses the present perils from England and France, the nature and conditions of intervention by mediation and also by recognition [feared recognition of the Confederacy], the impossibility of any recognition of any new power that supports slaver, and the wrongful ocean belligerency.

The speech to say the least irritated English diplomats such as Lord Russell who downplayed the importance of Sumner’s vies which he describes as ruthless and reckless and promotes ill will between the United State and England and France. The premier web site of Edo speaking people. D This posting is a collection of oral tradition passed down to me, my critical evaluation of folklore, and ideas from a variety of written sources Egharevba , Bradbury , Crowder , Basil Davidson et al , Akenzua , Igbafe , Erhagbe class notes Introduction Although Nigeria was the creation of European ambitions and rivalries in West Africa, it would be an error to assume that its peoples had little history before its final boundaries were negotiated by Britain, France and Germany at the turn of the twentieth century.

According to Crowder, this newly created country had a number of great kingdoms that had evolved complex systems of government prior to contact with Europeans. Within its frontiers was the kingdom of the Edo, whose art had become recognized as amongst the most accomplished in the world. The twin kingdoms of Edo and Oyo Yorubaland remained two of the most powerful kingdoms on the west coast of Africa up until the establishment of the British Protectorate at the end of the nineteenth century.

The population of Bakassi is the subject of some dispute, but is generally put at between , and , people. These two ocean currents interact, creating huge foamy breakers which constantly advance towards the shore, and building submarine shoals rich in fish, shrimps, and a wide variety of other marine life forms. This makes the Bakassi area a very fertile fishing ground, comparable only to Newfoundland in North America and Scandinavia in Western Europe.

Most of the population make their living through fishing. The peninsula is commonly described as “oil-rich”, though in fact no commercially viable deposits of oil have been discovered. However, the area has aroused considerable interest from oil companies in the light of the discovery of rich reserves of high grade crude oil in Nigeria. At least eight multinational oil companies have participated in the exploration of the peninsula and its offshore waters.

This enabled the British Empire to exercise control over the entire territory around Calabar, including Bakassi.

Percy Julian Percy Julian should be a name known to all of society for the contributions he made to the field of science. His research and development of synthetic compounds made him one of the most significant contributors to science and health care in the 20th century. Percy Julian was born on April 11, in Birmingham, Alabama, one of six children.

His father, a railroad mail clerk, and his mother, a school teacher, stressed education to their children. His father was denied the opportunity to pursue an education and was determined that his children would have that chance. This emphasis would ultimately prove successful as two sons went on to become physicians and three daughters would receive Masters degrees.

Bakassi is a peninsula on the Gulf of lies between the Cross River estuary, near the city of Calabar in the west of the Bight of Biafra, and the Rio del Ray estuary on the east. It is governed by Cameroon, following the transfer of sovereignty from neighbouring Nigeria as a result of a judgment by the International Court of Justice. On 22 November , the Nigerian Senate rejected.

Nigeria Table of Contents Throughout Africa societies that had been predominantly rural for most of their history were experiencing a rapid and profound reorientation of their social and economic lives toward cities and urbanism. As ever greater numbers of people moved to a small number of rapidly expanding cities or, as was often the case, a single main city , the fabric of life in both urban and rural areas changed in massive, often unforeseen ways. With the largest and one of the most rapidly growing cities in sub-Saharan Africa, Nigeria has experienced the phenomenon of urbanization as thoroughly as any African nation, but its experience has also been unique–in scale, in pervasiveness, and in historical antecedents.

Modern urbanization in most African countries has been dominated by the growth of a single primate city, the political and commercial center of the nation; its emergence was, more often than not, linked to the shaping of the country during the colonial era. In countries with a coastline, this was often a coastal port, and in Nigeria, Lagos fitted well into this pattern. Unlike most other nations, however, Nigeria had not just one or two but several other cities of major size and importance, a number of which were larger than most other national capitals in Africa.

In two areas, the Yoruba region in the southwest and the Hausa-Fulani and Kanuri areas of the north, there were numbers of cities with historical roots stretching back considerably before the advent of British colonizers, giving them distinctive physical and cultural identities. Moreover, in areas such as the Igbo region in the southeast, which had few urban centers before the colonial period and was not highly urbanized even at independence, there has been a massive growth of newer cities since the s, so that these areas in were also highly urban.

Cities are not only independent centers of concentrated human population and activity; they also exert a potent influence on the rural landscape. What is distinctive about the growth of cities in Nigeria is the length of its historical extension and the geographic pervasiveness of its coverage. Historical Development of Urban Centers Nigerian urbanism, as in other parts of the world, is a function primarily of trade and politics.

They attracted large numbers of traders and migrants from their own hinterlands and generally also included “stranger quarters” for migrants of other regions and nations.
