The company had a strong export market, so very few people have heard of Hazlewood in this country. What surprises me even more is how, when small bicycle companies ended production and closed down, within 10 years or so virtually all records and knowledge of them ceased to exist. This can even be true of large manufacturing companies. Of course, bicycle companies have always had to operate in very competitive markets. Usually that success means they branched out into motorcycle production, even if for a short time, or were bought out by a larger cycle concern. The bicycle manufacturers whose histories are now lost are usually those with small workshops. Some were, for example, connected to a bike shop that decided to badge its own brand. My research takes me to local libraries, browsing old trade directories and old local newspapers and magazines that may carry adverts for cycle shops.

Some bike parts have a date code cast or stamped into the piece. This clearly is when the component was made and not when the bike was made, but unless the component or bike manufacturer had lots of stock lying around in inventory, the date should be a fairly good indication of the year of the bike. At least it would be the earliest date that the bike could have been made. Of course, all this assumes the bike has the original component. The most likely components to be original are the stem, handlebars, seatpost, and brakes.
On a vintage bike in excellent condition that apparently had a lonely existence in a garage all of the components likely are original. As the wear on a vintage bike increases, the greater the likelihood components are not original, either through replacement of worn parts or through component swaps. Swaps can take place early in the life of a bike as the proud new owner upgrades to new or used components of higher quality.
Swaps also can be made as the bike falls out of favor, or is being sold, where the higher quality components are traded for lower quality ones that the owner had onhand. Vintage Retro Raleigh Caprice Ladies Road/Town Bike with basket. I have for auction a vintage retro Raleigh Caprice Road and Town Bike dating from the late ‘s. It is a 21 inch frame size with 26 inch wheels and has a three (3) gear Sturmey Archer gearset.
In these cases examination of the frame number — where it is, what it is, and how it is, may be of some assistance at least in allowing other specialists to hazard a guess at the true origin of the frame or machine. These publications have been invaluable in adding accuracy to the information — but even including their data there are still well over makes of possible lightweights to be confused over!
The author would be grateful to know of any inaccuracies and to receive further information to make the tables more comprehensive. For example, some BSA frames have BSA and a 3 or 4 figure number cast into the base of the BB, this is just the casting number or perhaps a model number — it is not the frame number. Nervex, the lug maker, also had their name on their BB lugs with a long design serial number.
Make a note of where on the BB the number is and its orientation — for example, is it upright or inverted for reading when lifting the front wheel up with the rear wheel still on the ground? Is it central or on the left or right flange of the BB as seen from this upright view? Some builders stamped the numbers parallel to the edge of the BB, yet others are random when compared over the years.

Some of the mid ‘s straight gauge frames had serial numbers starting with a single letter which was towards the end of the alphabet. This new system applied to the high-end i. Reynolds frames, and involved the placing of a character at the beginning of the serial number. The character began at the start of the alphabet, and indicated year of manufacture. Detail about the numerals that follow the alphabet are sketchy, and are presumably sequential serial numbers of some kind.

The bike was a disaster–a real rust bucket–but as I tore it down, I was astounded to see that it was largely unused and almost completely original. None of the bearings had any visible wear, and even the brake pads, gears, chain, and cable sheaths were ones that came new with the bike. The only nonoriginal part was the saddle; I assume that the original leather one died a moldy death as the bike sat decaying in a series of garages.

Although the Sports Model was the original backbone of the range, it was the Raleigh 20 which really set the sales records. Slightly cruder than the original Nottingham version, the 20 was nevertheless a sturdy machine which suffered very few problems over its long production life. It was made of local steel, and the main tube was of slightly smaller diameter than the original. In another departure, the bracing tubes from the main tube to the bottom bracket were missing.
