Donnybrook Donnybrook is a small rural town to the south of the Umkomaas River and inland from the sea. The town has seen better days as evidenced by the abandoned railway junction that used to see it’s farm products railed to factory door. There are a few small commercial enterprises eking out a living and providing support to the local community. Even the St John’s Apostolic Church has seen its congregation dwindle. This Gallery gives a taste of what it is, and what it once was. The Umgeni Steam Railway runs excursions from the station. Dannhauser is named after Renier Dannhauser who purchased the farm from the Government in

History The colourful and vibrant cultural background of Barberton gives the place a unique character that reminds one of the irrepressible pioneering spirit of man. Keep an eye on this site for further developments. Discovery of gold The Barber brothers and their cousin, Graham, were prospecting in a rift at the foot of the Ingudu mountains where they came upon a rich gold reef and proceeded to peg a claim.
Just the next day the Umvoti Reef, next to the Barbers claim, was discovered. On June 21, , Graham Barber wrote a letter to the State Secretary to inform him that payable gold had been found on State-owned land. Wilson made his investigation on July 24, , and found that Barber had indeed found payable gold. In his book Behind the scenes in the Transvaal Wilson writes that he decided to declare a township at the base of the hills where the Umvoti Creek entered the De Kaap valley, broke a bottle of gin on the Barber Reef, champagne was not available, and named it Barberton.
Hundreds of people converged on Barberton to share in the prosperity envisaging a paradise where money was to be made. Edwin Brays discovery of the Golden Quarry in , so named because it looked as if the rock was formed entirely of gold, resulted in the mine becoming well known throughout the world.

The reasons are historical. In the mid-seventeenth century, Dutch settlers began to occupy the part of South Africa now known as the Western Cape. South African law reflects this history of successive colonial governance. The ‘common law’ of the country in this context, ‘common law’ implies law of non-statutory origin is based on the ‘Roman-Dutch’ law of the original Dutch settlers. This is civilian law – Roman law as interpreted by the Dutch writers of the 17th and 18th centuries.
Thus originally, important primary sources of South African law were the treatises of authors such as Grotius, Johannes Voet, Simon Groenewegen and Johannes van der Linden. Law was modified or expanded by statute. When the British took possession of the Cape in they did not impose their substantive legal system in a formal way. Instead, it was decided that the local Roman-Dutch law would remain in force.

The epidemiology of rape has become an issue of considerable political importance and sensitivity, with President Mbeki demanding an answer to the question: The purpose of this paper is both to summarise and synthesise the findings of research to provide an overview of the epidemiology of rape of women in South Africa and to show how difficult it is to answer the President’s question. The review begins by considering why rape is so difficult to research. Data available shows that rape reported to the police incidents of rape and attempted rape per , women each year represents the tip of an ice berg of sexual coercion.
Representative community-based surveys have found, for example, that in the 17—48 age group there are such incidents per , women per year. Non-consensual sex in marriage and dating relationships is believed to be very common but is usually not well reported in surveys. Forced sexual initiation is reported by almost a third of adolescent girls. In addition coerced consensual sex is a common problem in schools, workplaces and amongst peers.
Knowledge of causal and contributory factors influencing the high levels of rape are also discussed. We conclude that the rape statistic for the country is currently elusive but levels of non-consensual and coerced sex are clearly very high. International comparison needs to be approached with caution because most developing countries lack the infrastructure for accurate crime reporting and do not have such a substantial body of survey data.
